Caligari-Ensemble

Live-Soundtracks

The Caligari Ensemble is a formation dedicated to the live setting of silent films.

With its unique composition of flute, guitar, cello and percussion, the ensemble covers a wide range of tonal spectrums. The four instruments alternate virtuosically between melodious and harmonically dominated passages and interact in an intense way in their purely improvised soundtracks.

The four professional musicians combine their openness to cross-art work as well as their passion for improvised music and sound experiments, which they also explore through contemporary playing techniques.

The ensemble’s name is based upon the classic "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari" by Robert Wiene. The expressionist silent film from 1920 is considered a milestone in film history due to its grotesque backdrop, extreme lighting conditions and its rift between fiction and reality.
